History of Mother’s Day

The earliest celebrations of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, where festivals were held to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In the 16th century, Mothering Sunday was celebrated in England, where people would return to their hometowns and visit their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

The modern version of Mother’s Day that we celebrate today began in the United States in the early 1900s. A woman named Anna Jarvis started campaigning for a day to honor mothers after her own mother passed away. She wanted to create a special day to remember her mother and all the sacrifices that mothers make for their children.

In 1908, the first official Mother’s Day celebration was held in West Virginia. Anna Jarvis continued to campaign for a national holiday to honor mothers, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. It quickly became a popular holiday, and countries around the world began to adopt the tradition.

On Mother’s Day, children show their love and appreciation for their moms in many different ways. Some children make homemade cards or gifts, while others take their moms out for a special meal or spend the day doing something fun together. No matter how you choose to celebrate, the important thing is to let your mom know how much you love and appreciate her!
